Early indications in
the history of jigsaw
puzzles are of puzzles
from European Map
Makers in the 1700s
who dissected maps.
These would have been
rudimentary Jigsaw
Puzzles as we know it
today.
Many believe John
Spilsbury, a London map
maker, was the person
who created the first
puzzle from a map of
Europe cut along country
boundary lines.

Springbok jigsaw puzzles were started in 1963 by husband and wife team Robert and Katie Lewin. The company was based in Canada.
Waddingtons helped them with the manufacturing process. They concentrated on quality materials with thick cardboard and state of the art lithography. The cutting process ensured repetitive patterns.
Katie Lewin took on the search for images based on their love for the natural world. Indeed they commissioned works from famous artists including Salvador Dali.
The gazelle logo was adopted in 1965 but later dropped and in 1972 the bullseye logo was put in place.
The company was sold on to Hallmark cards in 1967, with production moved to USA. Hallmark jigsaw puzzles continued to tarde as Springbok. Interestingly there was an online petition to Hallmark to appeal for them to continue Springbok jigsaw puzzles production, see

In 2001 they were sold on to Allied products.
Their adress is now Allied Products Inc, 1400 Kansas Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64127.

Their website is very well organised by puzzle sizes and years back to 2002 as well.
Springbok jigsaw puzzles are still going very strong. The line is beautifully crafted. Importantly the puzzles are hand cut to ensure no pieces are alike.
