For anyone new to the topic Nascar stands for National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing and is headquartered in Daytona Beach, FL.
Nascar is now the 2nd top TV rating sport behind NFL. Over 200,000 people spectate.
Daytona became the place to set world land speed records in the early 1900s. Early race drivers were involved in bootlegging. They ran moonshine down twisting mountain roads to people alcohol prohibition. The runners modified their cars to be faster more manoeverable vehicle. When prohibition ceased they need to do something with their cars and took part in races for money.
William France moved to Daytona from Washington DC to escape the depression. He wished to organise a formal sanctioning body with standardised rules and an organised championship. He set up NASCAR in February 21 1948 after discussion with racers and organisers. Nascar sanctions over 1500 races.
Erwin Cannonball Baker was the first commissioner. He was famous for his transcontinental speed runs from New York to Los Angeles. After his death the famed Cannonball Run was named after him.
Most races were on half mile to 1 mile tracks. However Daytona opened as a 2.5 mile high banked in 1959.
In the first Daytona race there were legendary names involved such as Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and Bobby Allison. Starting a long line of outstanding drivers, their modern counterparts are very popular nascar jigsaw puzzles.
Stock cars are production cars modified to be faster. They can exceed 200mph.
The three plargest racing series sanctioned by Nascar are Nextel Cup Series, Busch Series and Craftsman Truck series. There is also Nascar regional racing.

The Nascar Mexico Corona Series was announced by Nascar in December 2006.
