Murder Mystery Facts


Books

A whodunit is a complex, plot-driven variety of the detective story in which the puzzle is paramount. The reader is provided with clues from which the identity of the perpetrator of the crime may be deduced before the solution is revealed in the final pages of the book. The investigation is usually conducted by an eccentric amateur or semi-professional detective.

The whodunit flourished during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Many of the best writers of whodunits were Agatha Christie, Doroth L Sayers and Ellery Queen.


Games

Murder mystery games have one of the partygoers secretly playing a murderer, and the other attendees must find out who it is.

This may involve murders throughout the game, or may open with a death and have the rest of the time devoted to investigation.

The setup can be simple or extremely elaborate.

Often a theme for the party, based around a historical era or fictional context, is used to tie things together.

We usually select roles and characters based on their knowledge of the guests or if time is short just buy a murder mystery game. I like the ones where the information is released as the night goes on.

With a group of friends we hired Castle Lachlan in Argyle, Scotland and used the wonderful atmospheric old dinning room to have the murder mystery over a very long dinner.


Agatha Christie

Christie has been called the best-selling writer of books of all time. An estimated one billion copies of her novels have been sold in English, and another billion in 103 other languages.

Her stage play, The Mousetrap, holds the record for the longest run ever in London, opening at the Ambassadors Theatre on 25 November 1952, and as of 2007 is still running after more than 20,000 performances. Most of her books and short stories have been filmed, some many times over (Murder on the Orient Express, and Death on the Nile), and many have been adapted for television, radio, video games and comics.

Agatha Christie was born as Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller in Torquay, Devon, to an American father and an English mother.

In 1971 she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

  • Party favors can be great photos from the party made into jigsaws.

  • Make up the mystery clues on printable mystery jigsaw puzzles. This can be a brilliant creative pursuit. I cannot wait for the party to start after doing this.

Creating the mystery jigsaw puzzles is a very simple process. Simply load your digital mystery iamge or picture onto the picture software on your PC. We use Google’s Picassa. Then simply print it onto jigsaw puzzle paper and hey presto you have your very own mystery jigsaw puzzles. You can delight family and friends with mystery jigsaw puzzles. The range of pieces is 15 and 40.

The jigsaw clues can be simply find the jigsaw pieces, put the puzzle together and solve the clue on the puzzle. First team to complete wins.

A more fun way is to create your own mystery. One we have used is a Who Dun It, The Billionaire Murder. It is simple enough to give the background that a Billionaire has been murdered and there are problems with kids being disinherited. Now complete the jigsaws and solve the crime. After the first of the mystery jigsaws, the next set of mystery jigsaw puzzles are handed out once the team has completed each previous jigsaw and clue.

  • The first mystery jigsaw puzzles gave the location of a clue. the clue was a green card (signalling a jealous motive)

  • The second mystery jigsaw puzzles gave the location of the next clue which was a left shoe (signaling someone who has been left out somewhere along the line)

  • Next jigsaw had a lipstick and a knitting needle on it (signalling a lady killer and someone who did knitting)

  • The next jigsaw had a picture of a butler on it. The teams had to find out amateur actor playing the butler (battling against each other to go quickly!). The butler would steer the teams towards three possible killers seen leaving tghe bedroom that night. The disinherited son, the lover and an old lady.

  • The next jigsaw had a picture of a maid on it. The maid gave a whole pile of invented nonsense but one telling clue that the son loved his dad - would they believe it?

  • The last jigsaw gave a part of a very old letter from the Billionaire jilting an intended bride at the alter.

Easy enough to guess the old lady did it in revenge for being jilted all those years ago..

Possibly not the most complex scenario but great fun racing the other teams and solving the puzzles. Great fun too for the amateur actors.

Take lots of photos and make it truly memorable.
